How To Spot An Email Scam in 4 Seconds

BY Editweapon @ March 26, 2008

Punchline: Find the true destination of the link.

There is a (new?) Google AdWords email scam that just landed in my Outlook mailbox. It looked a little odd, so I held my mouse cursor over the link to reveal the *true* destination of the link.

Mouse Over

Mousing over the link that says, http://adwords.google.com/select/login, I see that the true destination is http://adwords.google.com.frje8fdj.cn/select/Login/.

Los bastardos!!

This type of “phising” happens every day, but it usually appears to come from PayPal, eBay, Chase Bank, etc. This was the first one I’ve seen “from” Google.

So now you know how to spot an email scam in 4 seconds. :)

PS - Funny enough, the subject line of the email was “Your AdWords Google Account is stoped”. This misspelling in and of itself should have been enough, but I only noticed that after the fact. No one reads on the internet, including me. ;-)
