My 3 Step Design Process

by Editweapon on March 10, 2008

My dad asked me to come in last week and help him out at Flypaper, his new gig. Here’s the email I sent to the team at end of the day to the team…

Hey guys, it was a pleasure to soak in Flypaper for 12 hours today. I really had a fun time, and I’m glad that we arrived at:

  1. Improved Learn-ability by removing ~40% of the UI from the “blink”, and now it can be discovered.
  2. Improved Learn-ability by renaming several things (the nouns and the verbs) and grouping those objects and actions into hierarchies that make much better sense.
  3. Better future Use-ability in 3 months with our NextGenUI whiteboarded concept.

I more than likely cannot come back to the office on Wednesday because I have a commitment to another client, but let me know how the Tweener v1 design “breaks” when you start bouncing it off internal experts.

And remember, this is how the design process is SUPPOSED to work:

Step 1. Euphoria from finding a solution,
Step 2. Despair while watching it “break”,
Step 3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 until there’s nothing more that can be added OR taken away.

(And remember, your audience Wednesday are your internal experts.)

I did actually stop back by their office the next day and I was happy to learn that most of my Tweener recommendations had passed the smell test of the internal experts.

I was also NOT shocked to learn that Tweener had “broken” an aspect that we hadn’t covered the day before. So after a few moments of Step 2 Despair, we figured out a solution and jumped back to Step 1 Euphoria.

It was fun.

Btw, you can download Flypaper phor phree, but none of my recommendations will be included until the early-April release.

PS – If you need help making your software more obedient, I know someone that does that kind of work.
